Safari vehicles and light aircraft have limited space, and most days you will simply be sitting, watching and taking photos. This list keeps things practical: neutral clothes for both the heat and the chill, a few pieces of kit that make game drives better, and the personal items that are harder to find once you leave Arusha.
Clothing
Dress for the Bush
Think comfortable, breathable and neutral. Khaki, olive and sand tones stay cooler, hide the dust and blend in better than bright colours.

Lightweight Shirts
A mix of short and long sleeves in cotton or quick-dry fabric. Long sleeves protect against the sun and evening mosquitoes.

Trousers & Shorts
Zip-off trousers are handy when a cold morning turns into a hot afternoon.

Warm Fleece or Jacket
Early drives and highland nights on the Ngorongoro rim can be surprisingly cold.

Light Rain Jacket
Useful in the green season and on breezy drives with the roof open.

Wide-Brimmed Hat
Shades your face, ears and neck when you stand up through the roof hatch.

Comfortable Shoes
Closed trainers or light walking shoes for bush walks, plus sandals for the lodge.

Skip Dark Blue & Black
Tsetse flies are drawn to these colours in some parks, so neutral tones are the safer choice.

Plenty of lodges have pools — and you will want it if Zanzibar follows your safari.

Ideally one pair each; 8×42 or 10×42 is a great all-round choice.

Pack extra memory cards and a zoom lens if you have one, and recharge whenever you are back at camp.

Polarised lenses cut the midday glare on the open plains.

High SPF — the equatorial sun is strong even when the air feels cool.

Choose one with DEET or picaridin for evenings and malaria areas.

Most lodges and camps offer refills, which helps cut plastic waste.

Health & Everyday Essentials
Pharmacies thin out quickly once you leave town, so pack these before you arrive.

Prescription medicines, malaria tablets if your doctor advises them, plasters, painkillers and rehydration salts.

Travel Documents
A passport valid for at least six months, your visa, insurance details and copies kept separately.

Cash in Small Notes
Recent US dollar notes and Tanzanian shillings for tips and markets.

Travel sizes, ideally biodegradable. Plastic carrier bags are banned in Tanzania, so leave them at home.
