Known locally as Bustani ya Mungu, the Garden of God, Kitulo was the first national park in tropical Africa created mainly to protect its flora. Its cool plateau is a paradise for hikers, botanists and birdwatchers.

About Kitulo National Park
Kitulo sits high in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, a rolling grassland plateau cradled between the Kipengere, Poroto and Livingstone mountains. It feels a world away from the savanna parks — cool, misty and wonderfully green.
The park was established to protect one of the most important montane grassland flower displays in East Africa. Hundreds of plant species grow here, many of them rare or found only in this corner of the country.
Kitulo is not a big-game destination. Instead, it rewards travellers who love walking, photography and birdlife, and it pairs beautifully with a southern circuit safari to Ruaha.
When to Visit
Climate
Kitulo is cool all year thanks to its altitude, and can be cold and frosty at night from June to August. Rain falls mainly from November to April, bringing the plateau’s famous flowers into bloom.
Come between December and April to see the wildflowers at their peak. Showers are common, but the displays are spectacular and the hills glow green.
The drier months from June to October offer clearer hiking and long views, though the grasslands are more muted and nights are cold, so pack warm layers.
