Climbing Mount Meru
Arusha’s Mountain
Ascending
Mount Meru
Meru is a volcano whose eastern wall collapsed long ago, leaving a vast crater with an ash cone at its heart. The Momella Route climbs its eastern flank from Arusha National Park to Socialist Peak, 4,566 m, where sunrise lights up Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds to the east.
Most climbs take three to four days, sleeping in mountain huts rather than tents. The final ridge to the summit is narrow and exposed in places, so sturdy boots, a head for heights and an early start are all part of the adventure.

The Momella Route
- 01
Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
1,500 m → 2,514 m
Set off with your ranger through open glades and montane forest where giraffe, buffalo and warthog are often seen, passing waterfalls and a giant fig tree on the way to the first hut.
- 02
Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
2,514 m → 3,570 m
A steeper climb through moss-hung forest brings you to the saddle between Meru and Little Meru. In the afternoon, an optional walk up Little Meru (3,820 m) helps you acclimatise and reveals the crater.
- 03
Summit Day via Rhino Point
3,570 m → 4,566 m → 2,514 m
Leave in the early hours and climb by headlamp past Rhino Point along the crater rim, reaching Socialist Peak for sunrise over Kilimanjaro. Descend with the ash cone below you, rest at Saddle Hut and continue down to Miriakamba.
- 04
Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
2,514 m → 1,500 m
An easy morning’s descent through the forest, with more chances to spot wildlife, brings you back to Momella Gate and the short drive to Arusha.
What to Expect on the Mountain
- 01
Savannah & Forest
The lower slopes mix open glades with dense montane forest. Walking with a ranger, you may pass buffalo, giraffe and black-and-white colobus monkeys.
- 02
Heath & Moorland
Around the saddle the forest thins into giant heather and moorland, with wide views over Arusha National Park and the Momella Lakes.
- 03
Alpine Desert & Crater Rim
Near the summit, bare volcanic rock and a narrow ridge frame the drop into the crater. It is cold before dawn and the air is noticeably thin.
