Overview

Kilimanjaro — Lemosho Route

Lemosho approaches Kilimanjaro from the quiet western side, through montane rainforest and across the full width of the Shira Plateau before joining the southern routes. The extra days are the point: more time on the mountain means better acclimatisation and a better chance of standing on Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m.

No ropes and no technical climbing — the challenge is altitude, cold and the length of summit night. You walk with a licensed mountain guide and a full crew of cooks and porters, sleeping in tents at camp, and descend by the Mweka route.

    Day 04Shira → Lava Tower → Barranco

    Camp approx. 3,960 m · high point 4,600 m7–8 hours

The most important day of the trek. You cross the plateau to Lava Tower at roughly 4,600 m, then drop back down to Barranco Camp — climbing high and sleeping low, which is what makes the acclimatisation work. The landscape turns to alpine desert along the way.

Good to Know

  • We have not yet published a rate for this route. Send us your dates and group size and we will come back with a written quotation, and the exact inclusions with it.
  • Kilimanjaro is a serious high-altitude trek, not a long hill walk. Tanzania National Parks advises climbers to ascend slowly, allow time to acclimatise, drink plenty of water, report symptoms early and never walk alone. Every climb must be led by a licensed operator and guide.
  • You need travel insurance that covers trekking to 6,000 m.
  • There is no proper night’s sleep before the summit — most climbers rest a few hours at Barafu and set off in the dark.
  • Read our trekking packing list before you travel.
